The L.A. Graffiti Black Book, now available from Getty Publications, features some 150 Los Angeles-based street and graffiti artists. The project was inspired by a 17th-century manuscript in Getty’s collections named Liber Amicorum (Book of Friends).
This is a series of portraits of these inspiring artists. The series and its individual videos have been honored at numerous film festivals around the world.
Fabian “Spade” Debora, one of the artists of the L.A. Graffiti Black Book, is inspired by his lived experience as an ex-gang member and as an Angeleno. Today, he is the founder of Homeboy Art Academy, a space to create access to art for gang-affected youth.
Juan Carlos Muñoz Hernandez, aka Heaven, is one of the contributing artists to the L.A. Graffiti Black Book. His meticulously detailed artwork shares a variety of inspiration. From low-riders he experienced growing up in Boyle Heights to meditation and oldies. The good, the bad. The pain and the happiness.
Mexican born, Los Angeles based artist, Fishe explores the line between his fine art studio practice and his devotion to creating clandestine work on the street. His studio work and murals are influenced by his interest in sacred geometry, op art and the textures and mediums that are drawn from his graffiti traditions. In recent years his practice and energy are focused on creating works on paper, and canvas. However, Fishe is proud to be part of the world's largest art movement, graffiti.
